LEDs are available in a range of colours - red, green, orange, yellow, blue and even white. There are even more exotic colours such as turquoise, violet and ultra-violet but they are considerably more expensive than common reds & greens.
The housing of the LED is made from an epoxy resin. Whilst it has to be translucent to allow the light out, there are different types of translucency available. The most common is "diffuse" - this is the same colour as the device and looks cloudy, to help diffuse the light evenly from the speck of semiconductor (which would only be about 1mm square) into the top portion of the housing.
Water-clear LED lenses are composed of a transparent plastic. They are a little brighter because the transparency of the lens does not allow for absorption or dispersion of the light. This type of lens is a light straightening lens, and is used in devices such as flashlights or traffic lights.

During lead formation, the leads should be bent at a point at least 3mm from the base of the epoxy bulb.
Lead forming should be done before soldering.
Avoid stressing the LED package during leads forming. The stress to the base may damage the LED’s characteristics or it may break the LEDs.
Cut the LED leadframes at room temperature. Cutting the leadframes at high temperatures may cause failure of the LEDs.
When mounting the LEDs onto a PCB, the PCB holes must be aligned exactly with the lead position of the LED. If the LEDs are mounted with stress at the leads, it causes deterioration of the epoxy resin and this will degrade the LEDs.
