The simplest semiconductor component—the diode—performs a variety of useful functions related to its core purpose of managing the direction of the flow of electrical current. Diodes allow current to flow through them in one direction only.
Perfectly efficient diodes appear to be open circuits with a negative voltage and they look like short circuits otherwise. But because diodes admit to some inefficiency, their current-to-voltage relationship is nonlinear.
As such, you'll want to consult a diode's datasheet to see a graph of the curve of any given diode's forward voltage relative to its forward current, so that you pick the right diode for your particular project.
6A10 diode has a cathode (-) and anode (+). In the schematic symbol, the tip of the triangle with the line on top of it is the cathode. The cathode is marked on the body of a diode by a band as shown below.
